Yet Another Auto Brightness (YAAB)

A small application designed to enhance user control over screen brightness. Initially it was developed to make the screen as dim as possible to save battery.
It has ascetic interface and very simple in use.

Tap "Start", adjust brightness using slider control below the buttons if needed. That is all. Application will run in background and change screen brightness according to current light sensor data and manual adjustment slider position.

Please do not try to use multiple custom brightness control applications at the same time. It leads to unpredictable behavior.

The application is open source. Source code and issue tracker are available here:
We are open to bug reports and feature requests.

Blue colours and sleep I study neurology and one of the first things that you learn is that blue colours keep people awake or make it harder to sleep. If you could add an option that removes blue colouring and shifts to green and red that would be fantastic!

Vlad Jennings

What happened? Bait and switch to old users of a once free app. Now using "Screen Filter" using Xposed Framework. Works far better and no lags or bugs of brightness before going dim. Cannot recommend this any more. Bugs or a purposeful intention to force a once free app for money.

Bob Wang

Does exactly what its supposed to I would give it 5 stars if it had tasker integration, that would make viewing videos at night so much better! Night mode is great for reading in portrait but it makes watching videos too dark. Please please please add tasker integration! Or per app profiles? Nvm figured out that I could just greenify the app in tasker and wake up app when out of landscape mode, it's kinda roundabout but it works

Tim Eckel

Love/hate. Hate the notification bar! Love the app, works great. But hate the notification bar! Can't turn the darn thing off! Annoying!

Erich Espinosa

Excellent App! I tried almost every free & paid Screen Dimmer/Filter/Auto Brightness app out there. This is by far the best in terms of ease of use and low memory usage. No fuss setup after installing the app and I've donated to support it's development.

Found bugs I want to give 5 stars but please add these features and fix some bugs: 1. Please add Apps exclusion list. 2. Fix night mode please; when i cover light sensor with finger in Day and in my room (not a dark room) it goes dark, this is good but when i remove the finger from display it won't come back to normal and remains dark stuck. Please fix this. Please try your finger and see. 3. App automatically stop working even after checking foreground service option.

Auto night not working I'm curious as how Auto night mode works, it doesn't seem to be working for me. Overall, the app is good.

Cynthia Kaminsky

Finally! Does what I need. Would like a quicker way to override automatic brightness without going into app. I still love the app.

Nitant Sabharwal

Great app, non flickering Brightness change, automatic and battery saving. Save power and save your eyes.. Nice app for smart people. :-)

Adam Hogan

Night mode is a must On my devices, even the lowest brightness setting is still too bright when I'm in bed with a headache, turning on my phone when I first wake, or when I'm reading in bed while my wife sleeps. YAAB's night mode does exactly what I want it to do.

Amr Abdel-Badee

Amazing brightness control I loved the way the app worked... Much more better than the system built-in auto brightness feature.. Highly recommended!

Mariano Bandivas

Nexus 5 Quick and simple fix for my Nexus 5 auto brightness. It would suffer random and frequent extremes. After utilizing this app, my phone is now working within appropriate brightness levels. Love this app : )

adrian fernando

Thanks! I prefer this app versus the more popular one. Just what I need and the brightness levels are perfect for the usual white background apps. What i would love though is auto brightness app based on content since auto B of the nexus 5 is perfect when viewing photos and videos.

Ambati Srinivas

Great app and while simple Sir, can you please add a scheduler also rather than just being manual effort? many thanks.

Erik Strack

Works great! Just the customization I needed for display brightness. Keeps my display at my preferred brightness at night, in the office, and in sunlight. No more messing with brightness! Android's built in auto brightness really needs advanced user options like this.

Pasan Eramusugoda

Solved my issue Nicely done. Good job guys...

jo ma

perfection... i use this with keyboard backlight controller (need root) and I'm happy. app custom auto brightness looks good, but very complex... this is open source, i can trust it more

Vít Janiš

Yet another? No, it is brilliant! My LG G2 has too dim display at night and this app allows to set up BOTH lowest and highest level of backlight and regulates it automatically within the range. It beats the default regulation. Simply brilliant!

donga kolny

Great I have tried some of them. This is one of the best app. Love it.

Milton Armani

Doesn't work Removing now

Saventh Low

So far so good Have it for 3 months now and I'm happy.

Mark Jervis

Fantastic I use my Xperia sp on a cradle in the wagon and the brightness is always dark but with this app its perfect in any lighting conditions

Ariel Velez

So far this app is awesome. Pretty customizable ? I do notice my device gets really hot tho whn YAAB is activated ?

Luke Corbin

Great. Works very well and saves battery. I would like them to a second slider for brightness when plugged in. This way I could plug it in in the car for navigation and have it increase the brightness.

Fendy Dwija Pradikta

Great App Very useful app with simple interface

Anwar Al-Baroudy

Used to love it Gents this was one of my treasured apps on my nexus 4, it's the only app i ever donated to!! What happened?? it now gets stuck in max. brightness all the time and stays there!!!

Gabs San

Does a really good job! Basic but effective app. Just what you need to save battery and your eyes! ??

Lai Devin

The best we can get Light, simple ui, works very well, and absolutely free. What more can we expect?

Kenneth Smith

Good I like it. It's better than the samsung brightness adjust

Hung Chu Chu

Love it Best auto brightness app

Asfaqul Mannan

Great work guyz.......really a good and reliable one

Mike Colmo

The best Not the most adjustable, but definitely the most consistent and easiest to use. Love the night mode feature with the custom threshold

Manu G S

Good one comparing to others UI should be improved

Joe Mudaka

Simple and works! It's the best. And that's the end of it.

Imad Abselem

Minimum brightness is extremely bright. Nexus 5

Phil Sweeney

Not working with lollipop The manual adjustment doesn't seem to do anything on Android Lollipop

Newton Costa

Great Just needs tasker integration

Kanaga David

Very good It's consume very low space and do his job at great

Denis Korotkov

Works best on my Sam's grand 2 Works good and keeps away some phone "dimmer flickering bug" what seems to be connected to some backlight %. Hope this stay as it is. But app lacks a smoothed reaction on minor change in light conditions. Even sitting still in a room I see as it all the time tuning backlight up and down... Don't do it so often and at times I use touchscreen. W8 for this features! Thanks!

Tony Atzen

If you hate the auto brightness minimal level, This app is a life savor. One minor thing that could be improved as that the swift in brightness could be a little more smooth. But as functionality goes, it's perfect.

Marco Idini

Excellent Tried some, not what is supposed to be..this one is responsive at the environment light changes, which is exactly the reason why you want it

Ross Muers

Quick Circle case issues Works nicely as a standalone. If you don't have such a case, I can recommend. Do the devs have any solutions to fix the brightness being switched to minimal when case is closed and quick circle in use?

Udoka Excellence

Best It is one of the best auto brightness control out here... To the developer, I strongly recommend you increase the night mode threshold from 80 - 100 as the suitable night mode threshold from my experience is greater than 80 but below 100 to avoid screen flicking when indoor with bright light.

Teresha Sprankle

Nope? It's not very affective. When at a level to see eye strain still a problem & when set to darker I can't see to read also it doesn't work on all apps. Bummer?

Chris Johnson

Much Better Than Samsung's Auto Brightness Installed on Samsung Galaxy S4 Active on Kit Kat and now Lollipop. Very rarely have to adjust brightness manually. Maual adjustment is about 90% and minimum brightness is about 25%. Samsung's Auto setting was always too dark indoors with no overhead light.

Erik Kvalheim

Lg v10 second screen When night mode is engaged, second screen becomes 100% non responsive.

Mike Colmo

The best The only way this could be better is if you could keep the stock Samsung brightness bar but that's not your fault

my mail

Good Difficult to use at first but have every function i need. Drain my phone's battery more than screen

Karen Hudson

Thank you I don't need this app on my Note 4, since it will actually go dim enough for me. But it was absolutely essential with my S3. It worked perfectly and I appreciated it very much.

Martina Steiner

Bugs Used it for some time. But for some time it's switched to night mode during day time by itself...couldn't see anything on the display in the daylight. Eyes got extremely tired of it. Just switching to something else. HTC M8

Eric Holbrook

Finally! Finally an auto brightness app that doesn't cause systems m hiccups or random screen awakening, and is not ridiculously complicated. 5 stars, hands down.

William Pang

Pretty good and does what it says in the description, only issue seems to be backlight dims and lights up when sensor detects slight changes which is annoying.

Todd Weis

Screen overlay issues in Nexus 6p Great app. Only issue is the permission to draw over other apps causes conflicts on Nexus 6P. Constantly have to turn off to change permissions on other apps. Then you have to turn it back on again.

Onz Brau

So close :( I thought this was finally what I was looking for, but you can't alter the auto brightness intensity from the notifications pane like with touchwiz. And there's no widget as an alternative. If this feature is added I'll give 5 stars :)

Rajas Pardeshi

Causes a screen overlay issue So basically when this app is installed, I cannot press the 'Allow' button when any app asks for permissions. Only the deny button is clickable. A very annoying bug post a few CyanogenMod updates. Devs, please have a look into this.

Algis Olberkis

One of the best app for screen brightness. One problem - if you use QuickPic for your photos and love feature "maximum brightness", with YAAB it not work. That's why only 4 stars.

David Gosnell

Works effectively Remains resident effectively if all relevant options are enabled. Might be nice to have a little damping in the response, and is lacking enough flexibility in the gain controls for ideal general operation – though the night mode mitigates the latter to a large extent with some experimentation with thresholds etc. More reliable than Samsung's own auto-brightness, anyway, which has a nasty habit of stopping working and leaving an unusable display in daylight until reboot – if you can see to do it...

Radosław Szkodziński

Does what it should Works fine with the extra keep-alive, though I'd like a non overlay brightness mode (thanks to Android M security) and a bit more fine grained curve and speed control. Night mode has too low range, even max is very dark.

Blaž Mertelj

The best out there I believe I tried all of them and this one is perfect. During the day and in the dark, it always takes care of the right illumination. Couldn't believe it when I tried YAAB. It would be even better with a blue light filter in the night mode. This is actually very important as recent studies show.

Teresha Sprankle

Nope? It's not very affective. When at a level to see eye strain still a problem & when set to darker I can't see to read also it doesn't work on all apps. Bummer?

Alex Le

Awesome This app solved my S5 Active auto brightness problem. Very low power consumption also. Great job!

Brie Koyanagi

I definitely donated and will probably donate again in a week if this app continues to satisfy me. Tried and paid for similar apps and found this. Fantastic so far, super light on battery usage. Give this a try.

Anupriya Dhawan

Awsome Just what I needed.. It saved the stress on my eyes at night..thanku..
