Yarn for Hacker News is a client for browsing and interacting with the Hacker News website. Yarn for Hacker News sets itself apart from other clients by allowing you to log in, vote, comment and submit content. It also has several features to help reading such as night and AMOLED themes and the option to read articles in readability.

Features:
•  Filter stories by home, top (powered by Algolia), new, show, ask or jobs
•  Multiple account logins
•  Submit your own links or original content
•  Share stories from and to other apps
•  Upvote, downvote and comment on stories
•  Collapsible comments
•  Color coded comment threads
•  Night & AMOLED modes
•  Read articles in readability
•  Search posts (powered by Algolia)

Known Issues:
Logging in to the Hacker News website after logging in to Yarn will invalidate your login on Yarn. This is because Yarn stores your login cookie, instead of your password, which Hacker News invalidates when you log in via their website

Finally yet another hacker news reader But this one gets buttons and labels the right way round, lets you set the default article or comments click action, and lets you open articles in a real browser. On top of that it's a generally nice UI. Seems more responsive recently too.

Logan Crump

Pretty good, needs some work This app is pretty good, it has all the basic features you need down. Could use some navigation enhancements, I would look at relay for reddit, which this reminds me a lot of, for some ideas. Overall it's good though.

Chris Douglass

Simple, complete, and quick This is my favorite of the multitude of HN readers available.

Ethan Madison

The best

Brandon Casey

Really well done! Excellent UI, Finally an app that can view all the sections of hacker news. The only things that are missing: * the ability to open hacker news links with this app from a share dialog. Right now trying to open a Hacker news link will attempt to share the hacker news comments. * I can't share the comments if I am on the comments and the article if I am on the article. Currently i can only share the article regardless of what I am lookig at

Rafael Marcano

Excellent app This is almost the perfect HN app for me. There's just one thing I miss: when I share an article, choose to share the HN page URL or the article. I usually email myself the HN page for reading the comments.

Tom 4000

Nice user experience Props to the dev who listens to users and responses fast!

Kostis Karantias

If you're not logged in and you view the comments page, there's a grey bar at the bottom. Also, the posts are evidently loading asynchronously, which makes me think all of them are loaded while there are still some missing. I'd rather wait until all of the posts are loaded to see them. Those are my only two gripes with the app, other than that it looks and works great!

Chris Tucci

Best hn app Puts its peers to shame

Jamie Bainbridge

Finally, a HN app which actually works. Let's you login and upvote, good comment view and comment collapse, tracks read articles, pretty nice interface, responsive friendly dev.

Milo Mordaunt

Yes. Nice design, allows upvoting, commenting, posting and reading.

Dakota Chambers

The best Hacker News app for Android Nothing else to be said. It's beautiful, fast, and fun. Worth the upgrade to pro. My one complaint is that I'd like to be able to jump into the comments of an article without having to click through to the article source first. Great work!

Andrew Maxwell

So pretty! Not only is it nice to look at, it functions very well and has a fairly intuitive UI. (Thanks Material)

Marcell Lévai

Great! Thanks for adding readability! I have two requests: please add a switch to options to set readability as default for article view and please make readability follow the night setting (dark background, light text), because right now its the opposite, no matter the theme.

Jonas Larsson

Duplicate items Installed and opened, presented with several duplicated items. Scrolled down to load more entries (careful not to click the awkwardly placed ad) and got yet more duplicated items. Fresh install, this was the out of the box experience.

bigyan shrestha

Duplicate news items. Overall design and functionality is nice but it happens randomly that this app lists duplicate news items just next to each other.

Joe Szymkowicz

The best HN reader out there. This is by far, the most functional and cleanest HN reader out currently.

Matthew Blode

Fantastic app I use this app every day and its is perfect. I have found no flaws and there are regular updates

Geoffrey Pascoe

Crashes instantly on startup

Oday Maleh

Excellent Better than the site

Giuseppe Scoppino

Great support I just found out the app had broken due to a change in the HN api and checked for updates...its already fixed! Icing on the cake.

Muzzammil Sahajaa

Great. Great client with great technical support. Hopefully there will be search feature for next build. Still, kudos for great and kind developer.

Francis So

User interactions make this app frustrating to use. Even though this app looks clean and modern, there's a couple user interaction design choices that makes it very frustrating to use. The main issue is when you try to scroll and it mistakes a scroll command for the left swipe causing the comment to disappear as the menu takes over. The second issue with this app is that when you collapse a thread, it shows the comments in the parent thread thus causing it to waste a lot of space.

Evan Sosenko

The missing HN app Still has a ways to go, but it's the best material HN app that uses the official api. Interface is a lot like my favorite reddit app Reddit News. I wish this had those animations though so it felt smoother.

Jimmy Chen

Lacks Search It's a great client with an excellent UI but its not really fully featured if it lacks the fundamental feature of search.

Sam Xiao

Need a font size option I like this app a lot and I could be replacing my old app with this, but I have a reading problem, would much preferred that you can let the user change the font size, I would prefer larger fonts.

Michael Kennedy

Crashing stopped

Ved Antani

Ads... Suddenly Ads appearing after last update. Well done

Gian Spicuzza

Great content and fluid interface

Jordan Simonovski

Best Hacker News Reader! I'm really loving this app! Are you using the new API? Also, is the app named Yarn because your surname is mutton?

Thomas Hawkes

Great app Any chance for top weekly/daily?

Simon Crowley

Fantastic app Fixed all the issues I had with it

J Miller

Now with night mode! Thanks for the excellent HN app!

shashikanth chillappagari

It's all there. It's good! Still needs lots of improvement. Introduce the push notifications option for newer feed

Ricardo Ferreira

Really nice HN reader Finally a option to remove the ads, and support the developer. The price is fair.

Joshua Baird

Best HN App I've Come Across! Now that I have the ability to remove ads, I couldn't be more satisfied! Worth the $2 dollars! Follows Google's material design guidelines very well! Looking forward to see how development progresses.

Jason Fah

Very slick Nice UI experience. Please add the ability to go straight to comments when selecting an article or have another button/link that takes you to the comments in the card.

Casey Howard

Ads completely ruin it I just installed this. I was loving it until the 5th post I viewed was a video. This app put an unclosable ad over the controls making it worthless. The fullscreen button was visible next to the ad but I couldn't click it. I had to use the "open in browser" option. Edit: it wasn't a full screen ad. It was a floating little banner ad that didn't have a close button.

Ricardo Ferreira

Really nice HN reader Finally a option to remove the ads and support the developer. The price is fair.

Amjad Ali

Best app for HN This is one of the best apps for HN, and probably the only one with support for user accounts.

bigyan shrestha

Duplicate news items. Overall design and functionality is nice but it happens randomly that this app lists duplicate news items just next to each other.

Matteo Pescarin

Wish the ads were non animated

Christopher Hind

Gorgeous This seems to be the only HN app which implements material properly. I don't have a single complaint

Tom 4000

Nice user experience Props to the dev who listens to users and responses fast!

Andreas Andersson

Good looking app But it was just uninstalled because high CPU usage and laggy scrolling.

Chris Douglass

Simple, complete, and quick This is my favorite of the multitude of HN readers available.

Andy Tu

Yarn is great For cats and humans alike

Sam Ross

Good, almost worth paying for The first time I tried this app I was very impressed, but disappointed by some bugs. It's had an update since then, and now there only one change that would make me want to pay for it: ability to make the "view article" button default to browser rather than open in Yarn browser

Derek Cochran

Great App Update 6/1/15: Dev was quick to add feature request for sorting by best. Would give it 6 stars if i could. Original review follows... Love the app. Material design done right and readability support as a bonus for paid users. If you could add more profile details such as upvotes and sorting by best instead of just default that would be great.

Harel Malka

Great app and my default hn reader now. Would be great to have a profile summary and a way to get to my submissions and comments

Werner Siemens

Tried em all. Best of the bunch. Worth the coffee money to upgrade.

Alexei Zakharov

Open in Yarn doesn't work Instead of open comments for the specific hacker news submission, it opens the main view. As a workaround I have to go to settings and back.

Justin Zymbaluk

Great hacker news reader. I really like the swipe to vote feature. I wish it was easier to switch between the article and the comments like my favorite reddit reader Relay. But that's my only gripe

Dakota Chambers

The best Hacker News app for Android Nothing else to be said. It's beautiful, fast, and fun. Worth the upgrade to pro.

Raemond Bergstrom-Wood

Not sure why when I open the application, why is it so slow to load the feed? The yc website is much faster and now has a mobile edition.

Trevor Suarez

Great app! Pretty and easy to use. It's well done. I really can't complain.

Dmitriy Likhten

Where's thread view The one big missing feature. Glad I could remove ads

Joshua Baird

Best HN App I've Come Across! Now that I have the ability to remove ads, I couldn't be more satisfied! Worth the $2 dollars! Follows Google's material design guidelines very well! Looking forward to see how development progresses.

Noah Schulz

Elegantly Simple HN reader

Julien Virey

love it great app to read hacker news

Vlad Ionescu

Best HN Browser Very rarely has odd behavior (such as a blank story listing) and that only happens when my network connectivity is especially volatile. Excellent, simple app. My favorite feature is the AMOLED dark theme. Thanks!

Jesse Tolj

One of the better HN apps Very fast, well designed and love the OLED mode. Only two annoying quirks - scrolling is choppy and feels non-native and it's too easy to trigger the context menu on a comment when you meant to scroll.

Sam Damon

Best hacker news app ...but it still has a few quirks. Upvoting posts is a little inconsistent and the comments change order upon each refresh. There also is currently no way to view your submitted posts or comments. Besides from those and a few little glitches, it's by far the best and most functional Hacker News app on the store. Definitely would recommend.

Alexei Zakharov

Open in Yarn doesn't work Instead of open comments for the specific hacker news submission, it opens the main view. As a workaround I have to go to settings and back.

Luca Candela

Buggy The ads still cover the comments or articles sometimes, it's a bit buggy but does the job.

John Wells

Up-voting unreliable I liked the basic functionality. Paid for it, but up-voting simply works maybe 10% of the time. Reported it to the dev, said he'd look into it, but almost 2 months have passed with no updates. I develop myself and hate leaving bad reviews, but up-voting really is central to HN.

Craig Schroeder

Best of the pack So many HN readers are available and this is the only worthwhile one at the moment. I do wish it had one click access to comments, but that is a small price to pay for consistent performance and the commenting features.

Harel Malka

Great app and my default hn reader now. Would be great to have a profile summary and a way to get to my submissions and comments

Khalid Omar

Works Has everything and is fast. Just needs font size options too.

Octavian G. Petrescu

Using it daily and already compared it VS the other clients The best IMHO

Andy Wang

Pretty good, but a little choppy Sometimes the app will take a while to start scrolling, possibly because the app is detecting horizontal along with vertical movement. This is pretty noticeable when scrolling through comments. Other than that, loving the app

Chris Douglass

Simple, complete, and quick This is my favorite of the multitude of HN readers available.

Dennis Ideler

My goto HN app This has quickly become my main HN app (previously used the free one by Manuel Maly until that one started giving voting issues; I love the simplicity of that app). Just paid for the upgrade (removes ads and adds readability support) because I'd like to support the developer and maybe we can see the ability to downvote added ;)

Mohamed Seleem

Lovely app with some minor bugs When viewing a post and you pull to refresh, the points counter is updated but not the comments counter. Also every once in a while I get 'story not supported' or something like that. Overall a good app.

Sam Xiao

Need a font size option I like this app a lot and I could be replacing my old app with this, but I have a reading problem, would much preferred that you can let the user change the font size, I would prefer larger fonts. Edited: after change my phone to Asus Zenfone2 I can't login anymore. Still crashing on the newest build as of 08/21/15

Ben Veal

Unable to upvote posts I'm sure I was able to upvote posts and save them to favorites when I first installed this app, but I can no longer do so.

A Google User

Fast, responsive developer! V1.7.8 now working great on Nexus 7, thanks Tim.

Jesse Millwood

Great app! One small suggestion though: I realize that having adds is important but it would be nice to be able to scroll up the comments far enough to be able to read the last comment. Currently, the add blocks the last comment.

Jett Gamboa

Best HN Reader for Android I've tried several Android HN readers and nothing comes close to this.

Ivan Mirić

Great app, but I agree with the other review: scrolling is choppy, and it's really hurting the usability. LG G2 D802.

Brendan

Great app Great, but for some reason scrolling down is a bit skippy

Nemanja Borovac

Good enough.

Dave Oxtoby

Good, but can be improved Definitely one of the better hacker news readers out there. But it would be a good thing to be able to disable/remove the long press on comments that opens up the user/reply controls as I often hold my finger around there to keep the screen on, and find the comments keep disappearing. It wouldn't be so bad but the only way to get the comment back is a swipe, practically across the whole screen, which sometimes takes a few attempts.

Christian Klauser

Quite Nice Does what you expect it to do. There is some room for improvement though: code in comments doesn't appear formatted (all indentation and line breaks gone). When you are reading comments, you have to scroll all the way up to reach the top menu bar. I would expect the menu bar to pop back when I *start* scrolling up. These are all the complaints I can come up with. Bonus points for the dedicated AMOLED-friendly theme.

I Will Win

Great but problem in scrolling I am in love with this app but please fix one BIG annoyance: it list items and comments slide themselves while I am trying to scroll the page. Please fix it now.

Nick Lanham

Pretty Good Solid app, and the developer is responsive to feedback.

Mahesh Suryawanshi

App is superb. please help me out to login into an app Unable to login to app. could you please help me out to login.

Ian Fijolek

Functional, but bugs and missing key features Looks pretty, but browsing occasionally breaks, comments frequently fail to post, no way to view replies, upvotes rarely work... Really wish it was open source!

Mike M.

It's pretty okay There is an issue with scrolling the article list, where there appears to be lag, and the list won't start scrolling until your finger is at least a certain distance from the point you started. This makes it kinda jarring and jumpy. Only real issue, but it's high impact.

Chris Douglass

Simple, complete, and quick This is my favorite of the multitude of HN readers available.
