Great Tool! Use this for mapping long kayak trips and keeping track of progress and rate of travel. Very useful. No issues and generally a very useable application.

View Ranger So far this application has far surpassed the other options.

Best of the best Works real well for me

Pretty good but missing important basic I've tried many GPS apps that are in Google Play and I keep coming back to this one due to the interface, quality of the maps and tracking/routing functions. Unfortunately it's missing 2 basic functions that would put it over the top. 1. The most important is that lack of magnetic compass integration. If you chose you can have a little on-screen compass that always points north, but it's not at all integrated into the map rotation, direction of current way point, etc. The app only points to your next way point via GPS when you are moving. if you are standing still and rotate the display is never updated. This is a huge issue that should be addressed ASAP. I use ViewRanger mostly for cross country skiing so I have to keep my phone in a pocket or pack at all times when I'm moving. When I take it out to look at it every thing is static. if I'm trying to get my bearing to my next POI or way point I can't. This information only updates while you are moving forward. 2. No information about satellite. While not necessary it's that is found in almost every GPS. You want to know how many satellites your are using in your navigation and how strong the signal is.

Extraordinary mapping tool With a full season of use, I not only love this app, I rely on it as my fallback / emergency GPS. Why is it so great? 1. Pay $14.99 for the app with the US map and you'll never pay anything again. 2. The map is amazing! Most mapping software seems to use USGS topo maps and only slightly alter it. These guys have come up with their own map with fantastic color-coded trail markings. 3. Outstanding access to community maps / trips. 4. Work on your routes from your computer and sync to your phone! 5 stars!

Love it This is simply the best tracking/ GPS app out there. I just wish more people in the states would use it.

Works great Def a need for hiking.

No heading information Does not tell you which way you're heading (for example with an arrow) unless you are in motion. This is unsafe for me to be looking at the app while simultaneously traversing unsteady terrain. UI seems pretty good otherwise. Can't recommend because of such a basic feature flaw for a GPS map.

Best out there I have every GPS tracking app on my phone. This has the best maps, simplest interface and bed best value. Most trails are on the topography maps. A must for any outdoorsman.

Not responding Revised. App did not crash on me the past two days, bumping rating to 3 stars. I spent a lot of time reviewing the various GPS hiking apps and finally decided on viewranger for the superior maps and offline search capability. Unfortunately it drains my battery like crazy and I get not responding messages when using it. I used the backcountry trial app and did not experience these problems. I am now second guessing my choice.

Great App for working with teens. I use this app in a public school setting as a recreation professional. Great features.

Excellent! Tested here in US and on trip to Peru. Worked perfectly.

Better than my Garmin I have been using this for a while now and it works great. I really like the live tracking feature and it makes my wife feel better when I am out by myself! Way cheaper and more functional than a stand alone GPS!

Best hiking GPS app I've tried I've tried 3 other GPS mapping apps, including Backcountry Navigator Pro, but I prefer ViewRanger because the maps are better. The key difference is that the trails on the US Topo maps are in red, which makes them stand out much better. Also, the US Topo maps, which are similar to Google Terrain, but also include trails, roads, and land ownership boundaries, do a better job of displaying terrain than anything else out there. And you also have the option of USGS Topo maps, again with trails in red, and more detail on other features. I've been using a Garmin GPS for hiking for years, and I now much prefer using ViewRanger on my Droid. My only quibbles are that the interface isn't the most user-friendly, and it takes a while to learn it. Also, it would be nice if you could display data fields, like distance & elevation, on the map page instead of having to switch back and forth. ViewRanger support tells me they're working on an upgrade to allow that.

Difficult user interface I want to like it but it won't let me. Developer website is no help. Needs serious tutorial or revamp.

New favorite Love it for finding boondocking sites

Great App Tried every other app out there until I found ViewRanger. I have been using it for over a year and I am very happy with it. I use it for backpacking, primarily to track our progress but also to double check our location. Have used it on weekend and multi week trips and it worked great. I can easily import/export gpx files. I'm not using beacon buddy and stuff like that.
