This application guides you through 10 great restaurants in the city. Some you may have passed many times before and not have realized that the wall was an entrance. I'm talking about Restaurants inside of restaurants. Unmarked buildings and unlisted phone numbers. I save you time by giving you a map button for each address to navigate yourself to every location. And if available, a button to call the restaurant ahead of time to make a reservation. Following are some quotes on how you will have to find your way to these hidden spots:
"If you go to the restaurant's address, 447 Hudson Street, you'll see a storefront that looks like it's under construction, but if you head west down Morton Street and open an unmarked green door, you'll gain entrance to the restaurant via its patio."
"At the back of the 21 Club kitchen, down a long flight of stairs, there's a fake wall with a secret key hole made to look like a crack in the cement. On the other side is a prohibition-era booze cellar and a VIP dining room, which can be rented out for private events."
"Hidden below the Brooklyn Bridge—hence its name—Bridge Café is seeped in history. It’s the oldest serving tavern in New York (established in 1794)"
"Enter through the corporate lobby, follow a small gold sign that points down an industrial stairwell. I was little wearry walking down the dark stairway to get to the restaurant. But once you step inside, you're transported to what seems like a Japanese oasis..."
"There's no sign on the wood-paneled exterior of this romantic Japanese restaurant--look for the hostess at the red rope. A night at Zenkichi can feel like a scene out of a 1940s paperback mystery. There's no sign on the wood-paneled exterior, just a light over the door, and a pretty hostess working the rope guards the stairs to the dining room."
"hidden downstairs behind a door marked "employees only". While the tacqueria does have great tortas, tacos and enchiladas as well as fresh juices, it's a reservation at the lower level restaurant you want to score. How did this dumpy former Corner Deli manage to become a hidden underground haunt? By placing the 50-seat dining room behind a maze-like warren, in which you first pass through the kitchen, then a sort of locker room, then a few more twists and turns."
"Reservations via a secret, unlisted phone number are mandatory, and even if you manage to get the magic number, it's been known to change. But you can always drown your disappointment at one of Petraske's other, more accessible Manhattan ventures (East Side Company Bar, Little Branch)"
"Crouched under the JMZ train and marked by a rusty bicycle above the door, it’s easy to mistake this odd eatery as an abandoned dive bar for sea captains. Big mistake. The restaurant design (it's a triangle!) was created by the same team behind Five Leaves, ensuring a certain level of ambience that simply can't be replicated. At nighttime, expect live music and a long wait to get in. It’s no wonder that a Chanel campaign has been shot here…"
"located in the basement of Greenwich Grill and does not advertise itself in any way outside the restaurant, so I was a little confused when I arrived at the address. I had to double check my Google maps app but thankfully one of my dinner companions had been there before and bumped into me in front of the restaurant right on time."
