EXPLORE | SHARE | CONTRIBUTE
Tracking the Wild is a wildlife social media platform that is an easy way to explore Africa’s parks & reserves, safely share your wildlife sightings and make a valuable contribution to conservation. The platform takes the concept of crowd-sourcing and uses it to collect the valuable data that conservation research needs to protect Africa’s biodiversity.
The goal is to enrich people’s wildlife experiences and raise awareness of Africa’s wilderness through sustainable tourism. Tracking the Wild’s belief is that our world's wilderness can only be protected when people have the opportunity experience its beauty and contribute towards its preservation.
Tracking the Wild has been specifically built as a platform that the public can safely submit their wildlife sightings without the location data of vulnerable species being made public. This is done by managing what species the public can see within each of the parks/reserves we list. Furthermore, rhino sightings are blocked from the platform and we also withhold the location of any species that is outside of a protected area. By taking this approach, Tracking the Wild provides the public with a platform where they can responsibly share their sightings and simultaneously contribute vast amounts of valuable data to conservation research.
Professor Les Underhill of the Animal Demography Unit at the University of Cape Town explains the value of the app: “Imagine trying to motivate that a species is of conservation concern if you do not have an up-to-date distribution map for the species. Ideally, one would like to have a distribution map that is based on records collected only in the past decade or less. This means that distribution data needs to be updated continuously. This is what this new app helps us to achieve.”
The platform features:
• Latest sightings feed
• Personal sightings history and statistics
• Hotspots - a heatmap of historical sightings (works offline)
• Detailed offline maps for each of the listed parks and reserves
• Species checklists for every park (works offline)
• Species guides covering all birds, mammals and reptiles in each park (works offline)
• A directory of Southern African parks and reserves (All South Africa's National Parks (SANParks) & most major game/nature reserves in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland and Zimbabwe)
• In app accommodation booking with SafariNow
• All sightings data sent to researchers at the Animal Demography Unit (ADU) at the University of Cape Town and other conservation partners.

Love this application, running on my S4 and my Tablet
Exciting Very innovative app. If more people download it, it will become a great tool. At present there are too few users to make it the top app. Enjoying it though. Keep up the good work.
Not working I was extremely excited about this app but can't get it to work properly. It keep force shutdown and not all the functionalities seem to be there.
Awesome app! Slick and easy to use Brilliant. I'm guessing data include, date, time of day (sighting), number of animals etc. I think that users would be very keen in participating in data collection.
Loving this app Great app, the design is great and experience very user friendly. I struggled at first to figure out how to add the location for an offline sighting but once I checked out the very useful users guide I found what I was doing wrong and now have no problems. Would love added features of sighting a notable landmark or attraction in a park and setting up trip specific notifications that let me know when something specific is spotted close to me. Can't wait for my next big game viewing trip.
Mark Just downloaded this great app! Super idea to keep you in the loop on the latest sightings no matter where you are!! Added bonus of being able to view the maps offline !!!! Cannot wait to get to the Kruger Park!
Awesome app. Very comprehensive and adds an extra dimension to your game reserve visits Very worthwhile. One of the best apps I've seen.
Great App Very slick interface with easy to find functions. Will definitely add to the database next time I'm at a game park!
Great app I've been using this app since beta and I love it. It hugely enhances any trip to a game reserve and even just for logging animals you see in and around your neighbourhood. Highly recommended!
Informative and easy to use This app is intuitive and really simple to use. Besides being an ideal wildlife companion, the app also provides the user with loads of useful park information making it great for planning the next wildlife holiday!
Awesome features! Great app to make spotting that leapord so much easier!
Mmm Couldn't even log in with google+.
Hannes Don't work at all
Well thought out Got a bug, if I click on the notification that someone liked a sighting of mine, the app crashes on opening
Good App but... 2 issues on my Note4. Map does not change when selection changes. The sightings don't update. Still only seeing updates from the 1st of July... today is the 8th. This is for KNP, i am sure there are more updates.
Will this app become compatible to my lenovoA3300-H tablet in the future
Utterly ridiculous app, wouldn't work unless you sign up and once I tried to sign up not only was it illiterate but from what I worked out (It showed up on screen then disappeared before I could read the first line) it said I was unable to sign up.
