Charles “Charlie Chuck” Welch will go into the local history books as the first African American to build a radio station from the ground up. Petitioning to the FCC for the license for the available frequency was a long and tedious task that included attorneys, court procedures, paperwork, red tape, denial and appeals. However, Welch stayed focused on what he refers to as “The 3 P’s… Prayer, Perseverance, and Patience”, and 10 years later on February 27, 1997, WJUC 107.3 The Juice officially signed on the air!
To the critics surprise, WJUC was quickly launched into the top 10 radio stations in the Toledo metropolitan area. Welch, always believing the African American community needed and deserved to have a voice in Toledo, was not surprised. He has continuously used his freedom as the owner to contribute to the community. To celebrate The Juice’s on year anniversary, Welch set in motion a fundraiser to help The Kitchen for the Poor from closing their doors. The second anniversary was celebrated with a “kiddies party” as an avenue to raise money for cancer patient Vanisha Collins, who underwent surgery at Cleveland Clinic. Welch was also instrumental in raising money for the medical expense of Ashley Coogler. After a listener informed him of a two-year-old who needed an organ transplant, Welch and his wife Marjorie drove to Defiance on a rainy Sunday evening to contribute to her fundraiser. He did this because he loves the “pooter-wooters”, whether black or white. Welch also used The Juice as a vehicle for justice for two little girls that were hit by a car on Easter Sunday. He recently attended the 104th birthday celebration of a nursing home resident, taking her flowers and a fruit basket.
