Speed Adviser is a driver's aid designed to reduce speeding and save lives in NSW. Using the GPS capability of your phone, the Speed Adviser app monitors your location and speed, and alerts you via visual and audible warnings if you exceed the speed limit. Speed Adviser is for NSW roads only.

Speed Adviser displays the speed limit for the road you are travelling on. Speed limit data has been compiled by NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), Transport for NSW and TomTom.

You can install Speed Adviser using the Play Store app on your phone (called “Market” on older phones), or by accessing the Google Play website on your computer. Generally, Speed Adviser will not download to your phone until it has been connected to a WiFi network. Be aware that it will probably cost you more to download the app over a mobile phone network than by WiFi.

You can nominate how Speed Adviser tells you of a change in the speed limit. You can elect to have the new speed limit spoken in a male or female voice, to hear a simple sound effect, or to disable all audio alerts entirely and rely on the visual alert (speed limit symbol with a flashing yellow background).

Speed Adviser will play an audible alert and a visual alert if you are speeding, to remind you to keep safely within the sign posted speed limit. If you continue to exceed the speed limit, Speed Adviser will repeat the audible and visual alerts. If you elect to hear alerts as spoken words, you will hear the warning "Too fast".

Always know when a school zone is active. Speed Adviser knows where and when every school zone in NSW operates, including gazetted school days and non-standard school times. Speed Adviser lets you know if the school zone is active and will display the speed limit of 40 km/h.

You can specify if you're driving a heavy vehicle or a light vehicle. If you select ‘Heavy vehicle’ and you exceed the state-wide maximum speed limit of 100 km/h you will receive a warning from the app. Speed Adviser will not alert you of any heavy vehicle-specific speed limit restrictions below 100 km/h, for example 40 km/hr heavy vehicle speed zones.

Audible alerts from Speed Adviser still play when the app is running in the background. This means you can have other apps operating and still hear announcements and warnings from Speed Adviser.

Learner and Provisional ‘P1’ drivers are not permitted to use this app. Provisional ‘P2’ drivers are permitted to use this app. It will operate with the NSW speed restriction of 100 km/h which applies to all Provisional ‘P2’ drivers in NSW. However, commencing on 1 December 2016 P2 licence holders will no longer be permitted to use a mobile phone at all, including Speed Adviser.

You must comply with the NSW Road Rules and not use the app or your smartphone in any manner contrary to the Road Rules.
Always have your phone in a commercial phone mount when using a driver’s aid such as Speed Adviser, in accordance with the NSW Road Rules, and ensure your phone does not obscure your view of the roadway.

Because it takes a lot of power to run the GPS hardware in your phone, and to reduce battery drain on your phone, you should use your car’s power socket while operating Speed Adviser. Also, you should always shut down the app when you are finished driving.

Speed Adviser does not collect data or report speeding events to Transport for NSW or any other organisation or agency.

USELESS APP Preferred when i was telling me what speed i was exactly doing! So I knew incase a cars speed'O was out!!! I don't just want it to flash and say slow down!!! USELESS

Ian Scougall

Great app . How often have you just wondered what the speed limit is? Now you can know all the time.

Kevin Guest

Great Nice if it showed present speed as speed alert did

kev fisher

A good app Would be better if it could reduce down to a floating icon so that I could still see nav maps and the speed limit at t he same time.

Battery hog Nice concept but uses a ridiculous amount of battery, even when not in use. Uninstalling.

Safe Driving Safe Driving Heard about it from a listener on ABC what a great idea Thankyou

great but need more accuracy This app is really so great in every way. and i was waiting for such thing for long time. it could save the last 5 points in my licence. the only thing about that app is that, it is not very accurate. for ex: Wollongong Rd, Arncliffe NSW 2205 the speed limit is 50 but the app says it is 60. but to be fair still more accurate than my new Garmin GPS. i hope it will come to the point when i don't need to look for speed sign anymore with that app

Unrefined interface for functional app Dearest developers, please, follow device orientation settings instead of overriding. Also, follow Android style guides rather than old Apple iOS ones

A joke This is lucky if it's right 50% of the time. Tells me to slow down to 50 in 100 zone. Says 100 in a 50, 100 in a 70 even gives 2 different speeds when travelling different directions on the same road. Someone needed to do a lot of work on this before it was released to get it even reasonably close to being right....

Love it Great when driving in unfamiliar areas. Large but took less than a minute to download on Telstra 4g and doesn't require data while in use as the original download caches everything to your phone. Accurate and not a battery drainer.

Ben Zietsch

Good app. It would be really good if somewhere else on the screen it showed the vehicles actual speed.

Samarth Joshi

Very accurate

Good. Could be better. You have to agree to terms each time it is used. This should be done once. Other apps can detect when you are driving and automatically 'launch'. This app should do this (and turn off when not driving) to be more useful.

Great idea, but a long way to go Within 50 meters of using this app, it told us the wrong speed limit, and this continued for 20 minutes on our way out of Bathurst. Make this app more accurate, add the current speed (we get it from our in car GPS navigator, so why not here,) and add Learner driver, and this would be a perfect app. I was hoping it would have this so I could monitor the speed as I am teaching my child to drive, who I am constantly reminding to SLOW DOWN! It is impossible to see the speedo from the passenger seat! No wonder with a response from the developer that this app is far from perfect. I stated in my review that as the INSTRUCTING, accompanying driver, this app for L plates would be very useful - NOT as an illegal distraction for the driver! Alternative app found elsewhere that I am using and finding VERY useful. It just would be better if max 90kph could be incorporated into this app. Don't forget to work on the accuracy of the app as mentioned though! Otherwise it's useless!

Way too large for phone Why this app takes up 125MB of storage for a just single function: to tell you the speed limit where you are? Please reduce the size.

Mark Focas

Needs a bit of work Please enable landscape mode. Also when I listen to podcasts, if this app speaks then my podcast stops so doesn't really work as a background app

Warwick Greenup

Works well Nexus 5 Does what it says, tells you when you are speeding. Of coarse the app is large, it's not using mobile data, all the info. is on your device.

Anthony Keane

Too big SpeedZone NSW or Speed Advisr is 99% smaller!!!!!! and do the same thing with the addition of red lights and speed cameras.

Tam Tom

Doesn't install very easily

hussam nooh

This app is very good and great helpful just one thing is it possible to connect this app with other maps like Google maps or Sygic, TomTom, I mean to work forground and background. Thank you and good work

ISSUE WITH PROGRAM While listening to Spotify Music App... When a audio warning comes on your app, it reduces the audio volume of spotify to about half. Only way to get volume back to normal is to pause Spotify playback then press play again. But, I should not have to touch my phone as I drive. Its clearly a design fault in your app. Pls investigate and alter it.

johnny palma

Didn't work Didn't work told me it was an unknown street. Waste of time ....

John Bird

Top application for drivers Speed limits at today's date

Oliver Lee

Incorrect speed limit. App reads out 50 when I drove pass a 60 sign

hussam nooh

This app is very good and great helpful just one thing is it possible to connect this app with other maps like Google maps or Sygic, TomTom, I mean to work forground and background. Thank you and good work

Hoi Fung

It would be nicer if this app also shows the current car speed. Good info to have namely school zone.

Robert Condon

Unusable but good potental Great app but voice is 3x louder than needed and you cannot adjust this separately from media. It also pauses you music and does not unpause it so you have to touch your phone to get it going again. This is illegal and dangerous and this app requires it when it could easily not require it.
