The running record calculator is a tool that helps teachers to identify patterns in student reading behaviours. These patterns allow a teacher to see the strategies a student uses to make meaning of individual words and texts as a whole. Running records, when paired with comprehension inquiry, can be used to identify an instructional reading level for individual students. While running records are a diagnostic tool, they can and should be used to inform instruction and to help extend a readers use of strategies for working on text.

What is a running record?
If Running Records are taken in a systematic way they provide evidence of how well children are learning to direct their knowledge of letters, sounds or words.

A running record is a means of documenting a student’s individual reading of a continuous text. A running record can provide a way to assess an individual student’s reading, determine appropriate levels of text for reading, and to inform teaching. Taken at intervals, these records can show growth over time in reading skills.

Teachers of students in grades kindergarten through twelfth grade are frequently asked to administer running records and may even have a schedule by which students should be assessed. This assessment is time-consuming at first but becomes easier and quicker with practice and proper training.

Teachers who master the taking of running records will be able to make powerful observations that can serve as immediate or long-term teaching tools. Learning to administer running records and even to interpret running records is not merely the acquisition of the skills of symbolic note taking to document a child’s reading.

Taking running records and incorporating running records into a classroom program means an acceptance of a whole way of thinking about the process of learning to read.

Lots of features This app has a lot of features and is my favorite app at this point for taking running records. It has everything you need to time the reading and it will calculate CWPM, WPM, SC ratio, error ratio and even comprehension. It theoretically will even save each student's data for you. However, this is where the trouble begins. Despite trying to add a new student over and over, I'm unable to save that student. When I touch the save button, nothing happens. It takes away one of the great features of the app. Also, it does not keep my device awake. Therefore, I am having to touch the screen of my device every few seconds while listening to my student read. I have tried to change settings, but nothing comes up when I touch the settings link. If these 2 issues were fixed, it would be an excellent app and more useful than others out there. As it stands right now, I'm still looking for a workable app that meets all my needs. If those 2 items were fixed, this would definitely be a 5 star app!
