The PIZZEY AND KNIGHT BIRDS OF AUSTRALIA DIGITAL EDITION for Android is a comprehensive and interactive application that combines multimedia data on over 900 Australian bird species with seven interactive modules for every aspect of mobile birding.

The app can be used as a FIELD GUIDE (like the book) or as a BIRD LIST, with essential functions such as view bird page, play the sound, add to your list and view similar birds available directly in both.

The FIELD GUIDE displays the full field guide pages of the book. You can browse the pages and identify a bird, play the sound, add to your list, and open the Bird Page for further detail.

The BIRD GUIDE includes a full bird list and individual BIRD PAGES for over 900 Australian bird species, with illustrations, species text, distribution maps, photographs and sounds.

The BIRD LIST includes all the new species and new names, with functions for Bird Page, Play Sound, Add to List, Similar Birds and Field Guide Page. You can also select regional lists, and names from IOC, C&B, Birdlife and Clements lists.

SIMILAR BIRDS loads a list of birds similar to that selected. COMPARE BIRDS displays the bird pages side by side for direct comparison.

IDENTIFICATION uses location, habitat, bird shapes and plumage to shortlist possible species for identification.

MY LOCATION is an interactive map for finding your current location, generating bird lists for your location, and locating birding sites near you. Or tap for a new location, get GPS co-ords and load a bird list. Or tap a birding site to get a list or open the site description.

MY LISTS is a personal list manager that includes a life list and sub-lists that report to your life list. You can also sync your lists to Google Drive, and export lists for backup. Sighting details include place, date, GPS co-ords, and sighting notes.

BIRDING SITES includes descriptions of 270 birding sites from around Australia, with photos, bird list, and weather forecast. "Show on Map" loads Google Maps for directions and navigation to the site.

The MULTIMEDIA DATA includes • over 250 field-guide pages • over 900 individual bird pages • all the ‘new’ bird species and names • over 2500 illustrations, 4000 photos, and 700 bird sounds • colour-coded distribution maps with seasonal status bar and endemic and red data species indicated • new rare bird maps.

Will be the best.... I have used the Pizzey and Knight book as my primary field guide during the 14 years I have lived in Australia, so was excited to see this app appear. I already have the 'other' Australian bird app, so it is difficult to comment without comparison. This P&K app uses the original illustrations, but with the addition of a number of good photos and also has good looking distribution maps. As with the 'other' app there are sound recordings of calls available. It is much slicker than the 'other' app and the sightings/list functions are quite different, some of this good (e.g. inclusion of one list in another). On the downside this app seems to have had license problems, some fixed (see other reviews/responses), but I still had to have my 'license' reset on their servers. I don't know what caused this or how common it might be, but the support service was polite and helpful. Finally, as with quite a few other users, I am experiencing a number of crashes (on the most recent Sony devices, not old underpowered devices). Once these are fixed it will certainly be the best AU birding app and worth the higher price.

Should not have to do license check or expire One problem, about once a month I am asked to connect to net and reopen app as the license is about to expire. I have paid for this app and should not have to do this (Morcombe does not do this). I am not always able to connect to the net especially when I am working remote for 3 or 4 months at a time. Otherwise I would definitely rate this 5 star. Thank you Pizzey & Knight for taking off the 30 day license check. I now rate this app 5 star.

additionalcomment, hoping for a constructive rather than emotional response This app keeps intermittently crashing, or failing to load on both my samsung media player (yp-g70) and my samsung tab 3 10.1, without explanation. A pity, since I wanted the info in the PK field guide without having to lug round the weighty hard copy. When it does run, it is not as well organised as the Morecombe app, nor as intuitive to use. Clunky in conception and implimentation. Bit like the books, really, where the Morecombe compact edition shines, despite some shortcomings. My apologies, I didn't wish to post anonymously - my first review. My name is greg muller, I teach natural history at university level. My students and I spend weeks at a time in the field, need an accurate guide, that works on multiple platforms reliably, doesn't need constant rebooting, is frugal on battery life, and easy to use. I've used these apps with hundreds of students now - they universally prefer the Morecombe app (even my experienced colleagues find the P&K implementation awkward), and the Morecombe compact print edition. I didn't post this review as a churlish commentary, but a genuine attempt to get you to improve it. I love the detail in P&K, but it's clunky. and M's maps are way superior.

A good deal This is a great app, it might seem pricey at first glance but you actually get more information than the print edition (eg photos, sound recordings, advanced search tool) which sells for about the same price, so in fact the app is a good deal. It occasionally crashes on the "Similar Birds" feature but is otherwise stable. I had trouble extracting to SD card (had to specify the location manually) but eventually worked it out.

Robert Kenworthy

I had 4weeks in Queensland with very little network but was a great app especially the bird calls.I recommend this app but the license check can be problematic and annoying.I will be using For 5 weeks in western Australia next licence check off 5 star.

Fred Stanvic

Fantastic! I wish I had this years ago! Highly recommended for bird enthusiasts

Gary Buckland

Keeps shutting down Each time I open the app it shuts down within seconds. I have a very good Sony tablet.

terry parker

Monthly close down. Not good for remote use when you most want it to work. Saw previous responses from arrogant developers who don't leave the office. Especially at the price.

Jennifer Goldsworthy

Great app Use this app all the time. Love it!

Ken Tucker

Great app. Served me well Used on holiday to Australia. I sometimes needed a book to flick through & so took the Slater guide too because it's small. But Pizzey and Knight is my favourite guide, so glad I was able to take this guide as an app - saved me a lot of baggage allowance! Invaluable. The licence check was a pain and meant I couldn't use the app for a few days when I was out and about and it required the check. I didn't know what was happening. Free wifi is difficult to come by in Aus, too. An annoying aspect of this app.

Chris Wirrell

Great application except for never ending license checks. If you're off line for more than 30 days, it simply stops working. Not good for remote area use! Response from developer confirms the fact that this app STOPS working after 30 days without internet...not everyone lives all their life in a built up area. Another fault but within hours of notifying the developer, it was fixed. VERY IMPRESSED this time around. AND the 30 day license check will be removed in the future: a perfect birding world?

Great but unstable P&K is my favourite field guide and I was very excited when the app was released. It is much better than the Morcombe app (which I have on my phone) with more features and better illustrations. BUT it crashes whenever I try and use the location settings. That really annoyed me at first but now I have had a proper use of the app it isn't such a big deal. However this app is expensive, dearer than the actual field guide. Overall it is very good but I'd like to see the stability fixed and if the price could come down by at least $20 this would be exceptional for birders at all levels.

Richard Webber

Crashes every now and then Very good app, best one for Australian birds but tends to crash if you do not close the app prior to putting the phone to sleep. Sometimes it then needs internet access before it will restart which can be a problem in the field. Fix this problem and I will rate higher

Index Mode Please also include an index view for quick browse. Improve the navigation between searched results.

Ignore compatible with your device App works on a par with similar app and has better graphics. However ignore message that app is compatible with device you are going to install it on, it just does not work with a Quad Core Kogan Agora. The installation is messy and needs tidying up, when these are fixed it could rate one more star.

Peter Christy

Fully featured digital bird guide. This app based on the Pizzey & Knight field guide is very good. I have used it extensively in the field and the ability to record bird observations on the spot has helped me keep accurate records. I like the feature that allows my bird lists to be exported to Google Drive from where I can edit particular records e.g. adding GPS coordinates and altering date and time information. One feature that would be nice to see in a future version is the ability to edit the time value when adding an observation to the bird list.

Bryson Lashbrook

Great Buy! Everything that is in the hard copy field guide is in the app, plus a whole lot more. Makes for a lot less stuff to carry around in the bush... It will take a bit to get used to the layout, but i'm sure it'll be worth it.

Andrew Wallis

Birds the word Finally I can put a Pizzey and Knight in my pocket and bird lite. Great app that was worth the wait.

Scott Buckland

Excellent Great app. Has a couple of bugs mainly with lists. Need to be able set defaults so don't have input same info for each sighting. Plus be able to edit time of day.

Geoff Hutchinson

Pizzey & Knight Birds of Australia Birds of Australia . I have been waiting for ages for this thanks, it is the best.

Birds of Australia Worked fine for several months. Has crashed and I cannot reload. Keep getting error message. "Insufficient space on external storage". Phone store says this Is bogus, larger chips would not solve problem??? Help

James Wilson

Great birding app! Fine detail location searches, calls from a variety of locations, photos to go with the illustrations, the ability to flick through the book pages to find that pesky bird you can't put your finger on. Really enjoying the app, becoming a much better birder because of it!

Richard Webber

Crashes every now and then Very good app, best one for Australian birds but tends to crash if you do not close the app prior to putting the phone to sleep. You then have to restart the app a few times before it will start. Thankfully the developers have removed the licence check as that just used to make the issue worse.

WARNING: After download you're forced to accept a 2 device only licensing agreement for the data. Should be first thing in the description, not something to find out after purchase. Shady! In denial about buggy interface and call concerns petty: Inexcusable problems for a field guide. Image zoom limited to 1 step upon rotating device. In bird guide menu bug takes you back to 1st image for current species on rotate. Makes it frustrating to use on a phone. Not obvious that scrolling images requires swipe on image part of screen. Deleting bird sighting from guide requires exit to top menu. Crash on map if no GPS fix. Only 4 bird sites in Sydney metro area on map makes feature pointless. Purchased with Telstra bill so no refund option. Was hoping to put it on the kids' tablets as well but I guess one copy for my phone and one for my tablet is all I get. (Not buying them their own copy - they're 5 and 7). Dramatically reduces the advantage over buying a physical guide. Not everyone who wants to use your app on multiple devices is trying to steal it. Kids and I are unlikely to use app simultaneously. Good data wasted. Pity.

Cheryl Coad

Great now you don' t have to get on the Internet every month to verify your registration. My husband would like to have the bird nests featured in sketch or photo form

Great app Wonderful app. Best feature has to subspecies information. It does crash quite often, but I also use it a lot. It also has some odd quirks. Definitely better than the Morcombe app which I also heavily use (I recommend buying both). 5 stars.

Cary Johnson

Tried downloading 4 times now with ample room on my Samsung SP. Each time, upon opening app, every icon says "data missing".

Simon Speich

Crashes all the time. Goes so far as not working anymore. Had to reinstall several times. Syncing of list did not work properly either, lost more than half of my twitches. To bad, would otherwise be a nice program. Now it even tells, me that my licence is not valid for this device.??

Gary Buckland

Now working really well. I was able to identify a bird in minutes that I had not been able to find in other apps and books.

terry witt

Pizzey and knight Great amount of info. The site guide is especially helpful. Support first class

Dennis John Plummer

I don't know how to use it.

Laura McCallion

Really useful and usable app I really enjoy using this app, it is very functional and easy to use. I did have a little difficulty loading it initially but the service was great and once I got help setting it up I haven't had any issues. I only wish that you could search by Latin name instead of just common name and it would be great if in the lists you could specify if you saw it or only heard it. Otherwise no complaints, well worth the money as I use it regularly.

dino cevolatti

Best Australian bird app Quick and helpful support for an app with great features, including maps sounds and lists, and a thorough, well presented data set.

Vishnu Pareek

No updates The developer appears to have no plans to update this app.

Georg Weiller

Would be nice but unfortunately to buggy Used it on a galaxy s5 and now on note 7. Frequent crashes on both. Also it doesn't find the external sd card. When I copied the (internally installed) data to external card, deleted the internal data and then directed the app to the external card, it worked, so there wouldn't be principal problem. Had to do that a year ago with the S5 and now again with the Note 7. Contacted the developer but no fix. Also can't backup or restore my lists to Google drive or card. For the price it needs fixing!

Alan Williams

Great app when it isn't crashing From the day I installed this app it has regularly crashed when trying to get the list of birds for my GPS location, and that's on two different phones. It's a fault with the app that ruins its most desirable feature! Please fix it!

Vishnu Pareek

No updates There is lot that can be improved. For example, currently the indexing images are too small, they could be bigger or give option to make them bigger. Secondly, the first index of Field Guide is Avocet, and it then follows alphabetical but the order of pages is as per the hardcopy. Please make both either alphabetical or as they are in book. The app had 5 star rating from me when first launched but then it was disappointing that the developers did not make any effort to improve it.

The content on the app is first rate, unfortunately the crashes that occur every couple of minutes are very annoying when using the app. This is by far the most unreliable app I have, including dozens of free ones. If this was a free app one could overlook that, but this is a very expensive AU$50 app! At that price the exceptionally poor quality is unconscionable hence the poor rating.
