******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF HONKY TONKY COUNTRY MUSIC ********************

Honky tonk music is a sub-classification of Country music which evolved from the American South’s blues, Western swing, and Mexico’s ranchera music. It is a music style defined by stripped down and raw music which had a medley of moods and a basic collection of guitar, dobro, bass or steel guitar (and later drums). This music style became prominent among poor white people in Oklahoma and Texas.

Honky tonk music has been illuminated as "a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, a little bit of black and a little bit of white...just loud enough to keep you from thinking too much and to go right on ordering the whiskey," and Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys greatly typified this style of music.

Some of the very prominent artists of honky tonk music include Al Dexter, Kitty Wells (the first major female country solo singer), Ernest Tubb, Ted Daffan, the Maddox Brothers and Rose, Floyd Tillman, Hank Williams, George Jones, Webb Pierce, and Lefty Frizzell. Webb Pierce became the chart-topping honky tonk artist of the 1950s with 48 hit singles. Hank Williams, meanwhile, made an enormous influence on Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Ike Turner and Chuck Berry.
