About the work
Homunculus is a scalable work that is currently being exhibited in two forms Homunculus Agora (h.a) and Homunculus Alpha (h.α). Homunculus derives its name from an alchemical creature that looks like a miniature of its creator, which is a metaphor of technology as a reflection of ourselves. As we pass on the technology remains, it holds our thoughts and shapes our future world.
Homunculus Agora (h.a) is a large-scale architectonic installation of several dozen sculptural objects that are organized in a flock-like cluster, which appeared in the Land|Slide Possible Futures Exhibit at the Markham Museum, Ontario, Canada from September 21st- October 14th 2013 and will be ongoing as part of the Farm to Table exhibition at the Markham Museum from January – August, 2014. The objects in the installation express behavioural qualities through light and sound events. Some of the objects are touch sensitive and interactive. The plan of the work is a reflection of the Ontario Green Belt, a nature preserve that surrounds the Greater Toronto Area, which can be understood a Homunculus in itself, as it is a territory that has been determined through human intervention. Agora is a Greek word describing a place for gathering. The exhibit serves as a gathering place for people to reflect on the reciprocal connection we have with the environment and the world around us.
Homunculus Alpha (h.α) is a prototype piece exhibited as a stand alone piece that appeared in the re|new Digital Arts Forum in Copenhagen, Demark from October 28th- November 3rd, 2013 (http://re-new.org/); and will be exhibited as part of the Land|Slide Possible Futures Exhibit at the Hong Kong - Shenzhen Biennale from December 6, 2013–February 28, 2014 (http://en.szhkbiennale.org/). Homunculus Alpha (h.α) exists as a single interactive object that sits at waist height off the ground. Like the pieces in the larger work it has an organic quality consisting of four petal-like limbs made from a fibre-glass endoskeleton that is translucent and embedded with lights causing it to glow, and with sensors that make it responsive to a person’s touch.
About the App
The HomunculusAR app was developed as an integral part of both installations. Through the app visitors of the gallery are immersed within an augmented reality experience that provides an alternate view and virtual flythrough of the piece. In addition, series of markers located in the exhibition connect to virtual information panels that describe various aspects and details of the work.
This app originates from LandslideAR, a mobile app used in the Land|Slide Possible Futures exhibition. Artists in the exhibit developed AR experiences included in the app as components of their exhibitions. Visitors use the LandslideAR app to enhance and inform their experience of the exhibit. The extended exhibit of the work during Farm To Table (January – August, 2014) has created the need for the development of a stand-alone app to preserve the A experience of Homunculus Agora from Land|Slide to continue with the work.
The HomunculusAR app is also an integral part of the Homunculus Alpha, single body installation. The app provides visitors of the Hong Kong - Shenzhen Biennale an opportunity to experience the larger installation in Markham by presenting a virtual presentation of the larger exhibition through the app. This experience is connected to the local physical object, which suggests the potential of the larger work.
