GNURoot Wheezy

Apk file size: 91.0 MB

Allows you to create and launch a Debian Wheezy rootfs without rooting your device when used along with GNURoot (champion.gnuroot).

Primarily, I install packages with apt-get (http://linux.die.net/man/8/apt-get) and I suggest you do the same). To use apt-get you will need to click the "Launch as Fake Root" checkbox. A good place to start is to do:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
Then start working. If you find out that something you need is not installed, just apt-get it. To install less, do this:
apt-get install less
That is pretty obvious, but sometimes it is not. You can use a search engine (like google to help you out). For example, I found out to install R, I should do this:
apt-get install r-base
You can also search for packages using
apt-cache search some_keyword
A very popular package to add right away is this one:
apt-get install build-essential
This gets you setup to run the make and compile steps of many SW projects.

Whats new

Hard links now emulated better. All known package installation issues solved as a result.

Amazingly useful ...but this rootfs is armel, which means that anything which uses floating point is achingly slow. As all modern Android devices support armhf, is there any chance of a version which uses that instead? Alternatively, a rootfs which just runs the Debian installer (and so lets us choose the architecture, and downloads the files on the fly) would be awesome too.

Mark Felt

Works as described.... ....That being said, the description should be changed to state that this is a sub-package(?) of the developer's GNU-Root app, and a person needs to be using that to launch a copy of Wheezy. [More details: This is just the files for Debian, the GNU-Root app launches the command-line terminal.]

Fantastic It's fantastic, but did anyone succeed to run GUI on? X11 and DE packages, even with modification I did, could not run. That really would save me a lot of time and work.

Brian Rahardi

Finally close to Linux environment on my Phone I need many apps from Linux since mostly I'm working using Ubuntu and find this Debian for armel has many similarities with environment I used to work. I have 2nd partition on my microSD from Link2SD and link the installation there so virtually I have no storage problem. Now I'm still working around for having real user ID because stil have no name here.

Great! Debian installation was quick and painless. Thank you so much for the awesome app! If I wasn't a starving college student, I would've donated much, much more than a dollar for this! Great work! Thank you!

Lucas B

Does what it says. Works great does what I want. But after playing with it for a while I got the question does it also run steamos? I couldn't get it to work maby someone else can.

James Harland

apt-get on your phone! A fully functioning Debian cli, working well on my unrooted Samsung Galaxy Core and Asus Memo Pad HD7. The base installation is minimal, and some dependencies are missing (e.g. cpp for calendar), but as you have apt-get you can easily resolve missing dependencies and add any extra cli applications you need.

Azbo Awesome

I did what it is told now... Now I have both the apps now when I launch the GNURoot app it brings me to a terminal and I cannot find how to install Debian from that terminal. Thank you very much in advanced.

Damian Chiliński

Necessity for anyone who uses phone just as universal device. Works well with X servers from market so I was even able to launch KDE4 (plasma+kwin+apps) no compiz though. Shame that doesn't use OGL acceleration nor audio device so I'm not able to launch Blender or MPlayer especially effectively but still awesome.

Kevin McGee

How to start this? I have tried installation a couple of times on Nexus 7 and .... what? Device signals "success", but there is no app/icon to be found. Please clarify if this only for phones ... Or if there is some non-obvious way to find/start this once installed.

Alex Fogal

I left a review on the main app, but again, why install to internal storage and not external? Is there something I'm missing? can I change this myself? Btw, great work, if I wasn't underage id donate $20

Fantastic start This works so well. Looking forward to a graphic interface to unlock access to more programs but this far is so far along the track already. Well done.

Simon Biggs

Beautiful That's all I can say, absolutely beautiful.

very good This is the only way I found which can install R into android without rooting. my device is Nexus 7 2nd gen. One question I cannot figure out yet. For example if I saved a file inside the debian enivronment, where can I find the file outside the debian environment? And can I get file from the device into the debian environment?

weibin huang

very promising! Installing R on Wheezy is unsuccessful. I can update using "apt-get update" I can install " wajig" , which is used to install R When using wajig to install R ( wajig install r-base) I get following error message ____________________________________________________________________________ Preparing to replace perl-base 5.14.2-21 (using .../perl-base_5.14.2-21+deb7u1_armel.deb) ... GNURoot rocks. From Botbrew Anise to GNURoot Wheezy.

reeza kabir

Really good

David Megginson

Great, but needs launch script Excellent work! I'd like to be able to launch a rootfs from the terminal app of my choice, so an executable "gnuroot" shell script setting all of the appropriate options and environment variables would be very welcome.

Evan Gorman

Doesn't load When it works I'll give it 5 ?

Totally blown away finding it so easy to start working with. Took little time just to identify right steps to follow as docs on these are still not in right places(perhaps some like to see docs before pressing install button) to make them easily visible and few of them were contradicting and scary saying interest from Debian going low for embedded Linux or how is this project doing today as I see last commit on last year (mid-2014). That sayed will make a note it was my 1st Android 4.4 device and the smoothness removed any fear :) I installed my needs of pkgs on top :) and even they flew in smoothly. As I see there are number of unknown issues based on platforms and Android versions changing currently (me too facing few like new window, ssh etc. on Android 4.4) I would like to get little more docs so clarity can be implied.
