This is the official Android application of the NSW Rural Fire Service.
This application provides information on current incidents across NSW attended by the RFS and other agencies. It also provides information on total fire bans.
The application gives users the ability to source information on incidents near them, using the ‘Fires Near Me’ function.
The ‘Fires near Me’ application is a pilot, and as such its features may vary. Support for the application is not provided due to its inherent simplicity. More information may be found http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au .
Your feedback, however, is gratefully sought, and will help us develop an even more useful way of giving you information on fires near you. Please send any feedback here: [email protected] .
For further information, please see http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au .
Initially centres the map of NSW on your Current Position.
Allows you to choose another location, e.g. the destination for your weekend holiday, and centres on that location.
Lets you know if there is a fire within 50 km of your location.
Displays any fires within a 10 km radius of your location.
Allows you to see a list of the bush fires in NSW, sorted by their proximity to your location—the closest being sorted to the top of the list.
Tap on the fire and you will see some information about the fire. Tap on the arrow (“>“) and you will see the list of bush fires in NSW.
Top on the arrow (“>“) of a fire within the list of bush fires, you will see a screen of more details on that particular fire.
Tap the map button from the Details page and the map page appears centred on that fire.
If a Total Fire Ban is active for today or tomorrow for your location, the Total Fire Ban symbol appears on the screen to warn you of this.
Fires are listed by the name of the nearest town or village, if available. This makes it easier for you to recognise where it is, so that you can avoid it!

App needs some work It eoilf be grest if this app would have the fire danger index, instead of navigating to the full website, very tedious on the phone. Adding this would make it easier to act on the bush fire survival plan
A biy buggy, doesnt always show the area the fire has burned. (One day there, next day gone, day after bigger area burned, day after ni area greyed out)
Works as advertised A very useful application if you live in the bush given that the RFS incidents website doesn't work so well on mobile. 5 stars if the map pinch and zoom worked without opening the nearest icon to the first touch and if it had an Android UI (Holo) instead of the faux iphone.
Great information, a bit clunky Great concept, information is really helpful, but zoom is slow and hard to use, slow to scroll, some information is a bit hard to find.
A must have app Great app. Great way to see whats going on around your location easy to use and understand. I use it all the time when I see smoke in the distance. (Galaxy Note)
It is the best Gives peace of mind. Chevk the wind direction and speed and you have a good indication of where the problems lie and if they will effect you. Thanks guys and gals it is a great app.
Great potential App concept is good. Easy to use, layed out well and uncluttered. The problem is that is is too slow to use. I have uninstalled it.
Great app, but could use some improvements. An excellent idea and useful application, however it could really use some coding improvements. UI is slow and unresponsive whilst what looks like it is accessing the network. The option to show a scale on the map would be handy, as well as a default zoom level.
Sluggish Really sluggish on the map even on high end phones, badly needs an update.
Good concept - crashes continuously The interface and information is good but it crashes continuously.
Some feedback How about a widget which updates itself to always display the current and tomorrow's fire rating of the phone's location? Configurable to use location of user's home postcode instead.
Tablets without GPS Great applet, but please can it have an option to allow users to manually set "My Location"? Not all mobile devices come with GPS or 3G. Our tablet uses WiFi, via home 3G or tethering to mobile for data updates.
Was better when it had the black areas The black overlay on the map to show how far the fire has spread recently vanished. A small point marker tells me little of how close a massive fire is or to have any idea how rapidly it is spreading.
Fastest way to know how close the fires are The only issue I find, is that zooming and panning around the map causes the "blackened" fire-zone area to move around, this becoming inaccurate.
Potentially life saving More than once I have used this app to ensure the safety of myself, my home and those to whom I am close.
Disappointed Was a great app whilst I was running the ginger bread operating system on this sgs2. However, since changing to honeycomb, the app is no longer stable :-( May this please be looked at?
Doesn't work with all Andriod devices Works on my phone with android 2.3, but not compatible with 4.0 Ice cream sandwich. Use to work on tablet until android upgrade. Apart from that works well
great work thank you, am doing the night shift and there was smoke around. downloaded the app n saw the fire was under control and nothing to worry about :)
Great app Really useful. However i am not sure what the colour coding on icons mean. There is no legend, and different colours where classified as 'out of control' 'contained' etc.
Do not leave home with out this app Extremely useful app to have during the fire season.
Slow and Sluggish I have this app installed on a Galaxy S4 and the it's very slow to update and manipulate the screen. I have seen it on an iPhone and it's smooth and fluid. Is it just me? Otherwise it's a great app.
Great app Works really well, I like the warning that displays when there is a fire within 50km. Good stuff.
Great App Just downloaded this app today as living within the catastrophic fire alert area. So far been well informed of what is happening around us.
Not bad Not giving you five stars as you don't show all fires/HRs. As I have an iPhone and it shows all in my area.
Good but have suggestions Cant save the map so shows the same location and zom ratio next time have to click gps to centre my loc then press screen to see zoom buttons then zoom 6 times. When click fires button fires often listed by street only no suburb mentioned. No option to receive alerts. Not always up to date. Glendale nsw fire wss showing 1ha for many many hours and then finally updated to show 100 ha but didnt know how close to my house as no shaded area showing burnt section. Good if saved manually entered loc.
Burnt area not showing A good app, use it all the time to find out the size and locations of areas. It used to show the burnt area as a shaded area but it does not show any more...
Nsw rfs 'fires near me' app Have been watching an out of control fire a few kms away for hours now and still not showing on the app although it is shown on the rfs website? I love the rfs and what you do for us but someone needs to work on getting info on to the app, some people rely on apps for info. Again, thanks to the women and men of of nsw rfs you are appreciated.
Brilliant. This app is fantastic. They have made excellent use of technology and the app is easy to use.
Fires not showing on App There have been many times that fires in my local area have not been added. Would not rely on information contained in this app. Shoalhaven area.
No support. Email does not work
needs tweaking good all round but crashes when I zoom in. could you add a option to receive a notification when theres a fire near you. besides that pretty useful
Must have Summer app. The peace of mind this app gives is immeasurable.
Brilliant app If you're in regional NSW - GET IT!!
Fires near me Great app. Very very handy.
Good What's the difference between this app and the other one?
Better than nothing Saw smoke close and took a very long time to update. Random different colors for icons on fires. Should have option to plot areas that you get alerts if a fire. For example next to schools and home. Good start but much more potential needed.
Buggy Freezes and crashes often. Slow when working, good idea, needs improvements to make it great
Brilliant Accurate factual information about fires, not the media hyped news we've come to expect on TV & radio. Easy to use.
Alerts. Whilst this is a really good app for the detail it provides, it would be 5 stars if you had the option to set a location and a distance (a widget would be good) that would give you an alert, rather than having to open the app. The Victorian CFA app (Fire Ready) has a watch zone and alerts.
Love this App. As an RFS member keeps me constantly up to date on fire situation during summer.
Timely info update and improvement suggestion. The information is slow to update, if the info is parsed from the website a more timely updating of the website would help both systems. Also, a feature where by you can set a home location or use the mobile's GPS position and provide push notifications to users within a user set distance would be great improvement. Sometimes you only find out the is a fire nearby when you head out of the house and see smoke.
Had this on my previous phone, was pretty good. Refuses to install on my new phone (LG G3). Been trying all day. Will not download.
Needs a legend in the app It would be great if there was an in app info bar or tab to explian the difference between a white, blue, yellow and red fires. And maybe a forcast wind direction. Also the burnt area doesnt show up.
Why no notifications? It needs notifications for less than 50kms. Would be usefull if it had this. Without it the app isn't much help at all
great app but pls be more updated with fires because went though Garrgong road recently and it said it was stilk burning but it was out
Anxiety soother My kids get stressed at the sight of smoke and this is great to actually see how far away a fire actually is to make them feel safer, and to know if we should actually do something as well. Perfect.
I'm confused. Why is there two nearly identical fires near me apps in the play store.
Good basic app for seeing which fires are nearby. Really needs the ability to push a notification to users when a fire is nearby, otherwise you have to keep checking the app to see if fires are close or load it up when you smell smoke. Have lived in Victoria and used the FireReady CFA app which you can set proximity alerts for multiple locations (good if you have a 2nd property or concerned about a relative), very handy feature.
Important App. This app is so handy as I live in a bush fire prone area. The reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because the pin function does not save when you next open the app. And the automatic location is usually 5kms off from where I actually am.
Really good My sister had this app so I downloaded it and one time there was a lot of smoke so I looked it up on this app and the fire was down the road from me
GREAT APP but one small thing that needs to be corrected This is a great app and incredibly helpful !! But a small change j think is needed is that watch and Act and Emergency Warning alerts on the map need to be highlighted and put in on top of none urgent fires, I've found that recently when there have been emergency warning fires they gave been hidden underneath less important fires in the near vicinity and have been hard to spot. Thanks! :)
It would be good if the app identified when a fire started. Hard to know whats new and what has been burning for a while.
Down load this app now For anyone who wont's a quick & simple nswrfs fire app then this is the one, I find it so easy I recommend it to any one. A big thanks go's to all the team who put this app up. 10/10
Great info As a firefighter myself I find it good to know where incidents are around my area
Possibly the most useful app ever Simple, easy to use access to information that might save your home or your life
