******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF BOP JAZZ MUSIC ********************

Bop jazz music or hard bop is a sub-category of jazz which is an extension of bebop (or "bop") music. Journalists and record companies started using the term in the mid-1950s to characterize a new current within jazz which blended influences from rhythm and blues, blues, and gospel music, particularly in playing the saxophone and piano.

David H. Rosenthal has been adamant in his book Hard Bop that Bop jazz music as a music genre is, to a great extent, the natural creation of African-American musicians who lived and grew up at a time when rhythm and blues and bop were the prevailing forms of black American music. Notable hard bop musicians included Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, Sonny Rollins Charles Mingus, Art Blakey, Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, Tadd Dameron, John Coltrane, Sonny Stitt, Joe Henderson, Clifford Brown, Donald Byrd, Sonny Clark, Lou Donaldson, Kenny Drew, Johnny Griffin, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson, Dexter Gordon Jackie McLean, Blue Mitchell, Hank Mobley, Carl Perkins (pianist), Bud Powell, and Thelonious Monk.

Hard bop is sometimes called "funky hard bop." The “funky" term refers to the rhythmic and rollicking feeling attributed to the style, and at the same time is used to describe soul jazz, which is usually associated with Bop jazz.
