Know and acknowledge
Many people around the world are being affected by Passive Aggressive behavior and whether they acknowledge it or fail to recognize it; it is still affecting their lives negatively. In the chapters below, PAB is explained simply and thoroughly to help the affected persons understand and cope with this disorder.
UNDERSTANDING PASSIVE AGGRESSIVENESS
Passive Aggressive Behavior (PAB) is a reactive behavior that is identified with non verbal aggressive actions and reactions. There are different character traits that distinguish a person affected by this behavior from others.
Rather than discuss a disturbing prospect in a proactive manner, anger is bottled up and the frustration that follows will lead to a negative outburst which is usually an indirect outlet. This character trait is a basic form of passive aggressive behavior.
The reaction differs from one person to another and not all will react in the above mentioned manner. Some people will bottle up their anger and pile it up; building a fire that will ignite all at once when the lid can no longer be kept shut.
The most common signs for this behavior include;
• Self pity
• Sudden violent outbursts
• Evading verbal or physical contact
• Sudden changes in attitude
• Mood swings
It is hard to recognize people affected with this behavior as they usually display a calm demeanor making it hard to realize the negative or positive thoughts that could be forming in their minds at the moment.
Note that, not all people that display these character traits are passive aggressive. While going through different stages in life, all of us have felt the above traits and revealed such behaviors because these are basic human emotions and states of mind considering the given circumstance. This however does not mean that you may have the disorder. But if you realize that you are identifying with such character traits more often than not, it is advisable that you inform your doctor sooner rather than later.
Our behaviors usually affect the people we are most in contact with daily and this is no different from people with PAB disorder. Often, they will push the people they love away or manipulate them into doing things they wouldn’t usually do in an effort to understand the cause of an outburst. Soon relationships become tense and complex and later destroyed. The PAB begs to be understood without actually explaining itself and this will lead to confusion and misunderstanding. It is the most common factor of relationship rife and has affected partners, parents and children, friends and so on.
The PAB often will not reveal the truth of the matter and will affect people that will easily surrender to their demands forcing them to corporate or give in to their demands and yet blind to the absolute truth of the matter.
The passive aggressive may have little or no communication giving short one worded answers. They are unable to hold eye contact and a destructive in their show of strength rather than discussing the real issue. Criticism is often used as a form of reverse psychology to mask vulnerability.
Unfortunately, because PAB cannot be diagnosed by psychologists and therefore not treated fast enough, it quickly turns into a habit and eventually the person will go down a path of depression and despair and also impose disorder onto the people surrounding him.
It is advisable that in case you suspect such behavior in someone you are acquainted with and are unable to go down the medical or professional path, it is better to keep informed on how to manage the affected persons.
