A family friend of mine was living in an old house with her husband. It was in need of many repairs. For privacy reasons we'll call them Cindy and Tom.
Tom did not have much construction experience but he tried to remodel their home himself anyway.
He made several mistakes that were not known until after he passed away.
After Tom’s remodel job, new layout of the house forced all guests to pass through the master bedroom to get to the only bathroom.
There was a closet that was too small to fit any clothes in.
There was never enough hot water, even though the hot water heater was too big for the size of the house.
There was a strange sewer like smell in the house.
A crack started to form in the celling that kept getting bigger.
Also, the floor in the entire house just did not feel right and it squeaked in a weird way.
I decided to help out by fixing up the house to make it more livable.
Of course, Cindy had to move out during the construction because of all of the dust.
I quickly found that some load bearing walls had been moved and were no longer supporting the roof; several drain pipes were held together with duct tape and were not pitched at the correct angle to allow water to flow freely. There was also evidence of many animals that had lived in the attic.
I put in new floors, all new plumbing (water and drains), tiled the entry and the bath, cleaned out the attic etc...
There is still a lot of work to do.
The first major setback happened when I fell off a ladder into a hole in the floor and broke my arm. For several months I could not use any tools that twist or cause any impact. So I could not use hammers, drills or screwdrivers.
The second setback was a theft that resulted in the loss of almost the entire budget for the repairs.
The third was when I needed to start working extra hours at my regular job in order to remain employed.
The worsening economy made the whole project seem pointless since the house was worth less and less each month. However I kept working on it and using any spare monies I could come up with to buy materials so it would not be a complete loss for Cindy.
Recently my granddaughter came down with a very serious illness and needed to stay in intensive care, so I needed to take a break from working on the house. When I finally went to the house the front door was chained from the inside. I went around back and found the back door was kicked in and the door jamb was shattered. Someone had broken in to the house. I looked around to see what was taken. I went to turn on the lights and there was no electricity. Then I heard a strange dripping sound. And I turned the faucet on in the bathroom and there was no water. I looked under the house to see the source of the dripping sound and found that a cooper thief had ripped out all of the new copper pipes and the electrical wiring. I had to leave and come back with a flashlight to get a better look around. They had taken several tools from inside the house and busted the lock off the tool shed and took some yard tools as well. Now the house is unlivable.
The thieves probably got less than $100 worth of copper and did thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.
