Airboss lets you use your phone as an alternative to a GoPro for R/C aerial photography and FPV. It works over either a cellular network or Wi-Fi and provides a real-time video stream to a ground station where you can command it to record video and take still photos (photos and videos are stored in the Airboss album on the phone). The ground station can be another Android device running Airboss or a laptop running Google Chrome.

You can keep up to date on progress and give feedback at

OK, with that out of the way...

This is an alpha release so you will likely experience all kinds of issues if you decide to try it out, including app crashes and various other bugs and poor user experiences. Sorry about that -- I'm working to eventually get these issues ironed out.

Latency for FPV is pretty good most of the time, though things can get choppy and laggy when there is network congestion or the phone has lots of background tasks. It's not as good as more traditional analog FPV solutions but it may be good enough depending on your needs.

So far tested it's been tested with a Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Nexus 4, Moto G, HTC One, Kyocera Hydro, and plenty of others. Unsurprisingly, the more expensive phones works better generally though the Moto G performs really quite well for its price. Also, some phones will take video and the highest possible quality (Nexus 4, Moto G) while others will only record video at the same resolution as the real time stream which is not very good (HTC One).

This is very much a work in progress so unless you're a glutton for punishment I recommend you pass on it for now. If you decide to give it a try anyway please email me at [email protected] and let me know how (or if) it worked for you. If you do end up using Airboss regularly I'd love to see pictures of it in action and will try to get them up on the website for others to check out.

Whats new

    - Added "SOS" siren for lost aircraft
    - Improved logging to try to fix the issue on some devices where the live feed freezes when recording video
    - Bearing and distance to home point is now displayed
    - Can now show/hide HUD elements and customize units
    - A new setting that will send me your logs if you're having trouble connecting
    - A "Set Home Point" button on both the transmitting and receiving devices

I'm only just getting into building my first quad and am still ordering parts and looking for a simple fpv setup. I've only given this a quick test, but I'm quite impressed with the performance and features. I can't wait to get my first quad up and running so I can give this a try in a real test. I will update my review when I am able to do this. My only issue so far is with the HUD level, it appears to shift a bit and can't decide where level is. Whether that's the app or my phone sensors, I'm not sure yet

droid RAZR max HD worked well when testing . have not used with 4g yet tho. Would be cool if I could use on a local network instead of through airboss website . if you have unlimited data and your phone has a dual core or better . u could realistically use this app for fpv.

The Future of FPV Would love this if there was a cheap camera that could connect to 4g, not my phone lol. Amazing app and I love this

Great Platform It would be good to see the following integrated. Continuous photos with individual GPS tagging saved to the Airborne device. In fact that's it that would make this app beyond awesome as we could then all start Geo Mapping :-) great app no bad points from me just praise for a great free app well put together look forward to more in the future.

Love it. This just keeps getting better and better. Great work.

Tried it and it worked fine. About 200ms delay overall. Not sure if that's typical. HTC one m7 and nexus 7

Levi Cousino

Nice app simple and clean I only wish there was video quality settings high med low auto or something or a video setting that will give u low latency so you set the max latency and it changes the quality if need be

Daniel Silva

Video quality is very bad Using wifi between a Samsung S4 with CM11 and a Samsung Tab S. And the transmitter doesn't work with the screen off.

Harekrushna Maharana

Nice apps lags of 1 second

Bradley King

Great Great app, works very well

Justin Peeples

Works great Using it on my F450 Flamewheel and it works great.

Awesome I terrorized my co-workers with this app - had my Galaxy Note 2 strapped to my Rover and took it for a drive through the office...hehehe. It worked great. I didn't get the recording in my case, but that's fine - I'm sure the stability will come.

Works, glitchy but expected with an alpha release

Максим Овсянников

Works perfectly! Works fine via 3g! Now my old android phone useful again. Please do not stop the development of the application. Put some links to forums Multirotor owners. The application is very necessary. Tracking device with camera cost 300-400 USD$. It would be great to make a connection, not only through your server, but the direct connections on real IP. Some providers give a public IP address for cellular network.

Spencer Lohr

Pleasantly surprised Not the greatest latency, but a lot better than I was expecting! Keep up the good work!

Chris R

Works great for FPV Streaming. I decided to give this a go, having an old galaxy s3 laying around, figured this could be a great way to both record hi def aerial videos, while viewing fpv. The streaming works fantastic, although hitting the record command on the recieving device results in a "record error:null" error on the transmitting device. Photos however, work fine. Hopefully development continues, this has potential to spearhead the future of andrones

Coolest thing I've done with an old phone... Transmitting from my old motorola droid razr to my droid turbo with almost no issues and low latency over my home WiFi. I don't even care that it did disconnect once when I tried recording video - that's not what I want it for anyway. The latency I encountered in similar apps made them useless by comparison. For the price of repurposing an old smart phone that was just lying around anyway, this is pretty sweet.

Google cardboard How about Google cardboard support that would be amazing

Joseph Susanto

Cant get it to work with hotspot. It almost makes it useless for me

Andrii Dymov

Will be must have would it work without internet, just on peer to peer wifi connection. Photo quality isn't good, though it's not the main purpose of this app
